This sketch is from a series of work based on Greco-Roman statues found at The Louvre. The Sleeping Hermaphroditus depicts Hermaphroditus (the child of Aphrodite and Hermes) life-size. While it is unknown who carved the figure, the mattress on which it lays was carved in 1620 by Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
